The Preterm Infant: NICU experience and beyond
This one-day Education Day is specifically designed for CIMIs who do not have experience in Neonatal Intensive/special care and want to know more about the preterm baby.
MORNING SESSION
- Overview of the philosophy at the heart of the Positive Touch Programme©., which is a special qualification for NICU nurses.
- Introducing Family Centred Developmental Care (NIDCAP), Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale (NBAS) & The Humane Neonatal Care Initiative.
- Definition of the preterm and near-term infant.
- Neonatal Skin, use of oil, and the importance of touch & parent-infant attunement in the NICU
- Behavioural states, Cues of Approach and Avoidance, Self Regulation & Habituation
- The 5-step ‘Dialogue’ - the basis for all touch in the NICU.
- A brief pictorial review of how positive touch is introduced in the NICU.
THE AFTERNOON SESSION will give attention to CIMI community infant massage classes.

- Correcting the age
- Positioning
- Trusting our IAIM philosophy
- Will a 5 week massage course fulfil the needs of both the preterm baby and their parent?
All CIMIs will need to bring along a small pillow, blanket and a newborn/premature-sized doll.

They have open eyes and the head moves around. It is important that the soft body extends to below the knee and elbow and the hands are open and the feet look real. This doll is approximately the size of a 2kg baby.
If possible provide clothes for, and name your doll with a name band/label to avoid mix-ups.
